Week 1: Observation Week

Monday, Jan.14 at 9 am in UNP, we had an orientation headed by the head of the International Office, Mr. Ananda Putra about our schedule for the whole month, and after the orientation, about 11:37 in the morning, we were then deployed to our host schools, and me and my co-participant from SPUS, Louise were assigned in SD BAiturrahmah.

Orientation
Me and Louise with the headmaster of SD Baiturrahmah; introducing ourselves to the pupils.

After we roamed around the school, the headmasters told us to wear white hijab and white long-sleeves when in school. So what me and Louise did, we bought a hijab and a white blouse.

On the 2nd day of observation, Jan. 15 at 8 am, the teachers and the grades 1, 2, and 3 pupils had an exercise. Every Tuesday, the pupils will wear their P.E uniform and have an exercise or any other activities. As to grades 4, 5, and 6, they had their Silat Martial Arts Activity every Tuesday. Only grades 1, 2, and 3 have their exercise and grades 4, 5, and 6 have their Silat Martial Arts.

At 9 am, I observed a math teacher, because the English teacher just passed away weeks before the day I was assigned in Baiturrahmah and because the new English teacher has not yet come. I observed how the teachers teach and manage their pupils inside the classroom.

On my 3rd day of observation, the headmasters approached me and asked a favor to make me teach Grades 4, 5, and 6 with English songs or basic English greetings and words for about 3 days since the new English teacher is not yet around. So as a teacher, you can’t and should not say “NO!” so I said “YES!” to an opportunity like this.
